Flick of the Day

Film: BEAUTIFUL CREATURES
Director: Bill Eagles
Actors: Susan Lynch, Rachel Weisz, Iain Glen, Maurice Roeves, Tom Mannion, Alex Norton
Year: 2000

Synopsis: Two women meet under strange circumstances and decide to extort money from a dangerous millionaire.

I caught this film a few months back and was pleasantly surprised. It features an amazing Susan Lynch and a pre-fame Rachel Weisz (donning a platinum wig). It's weird and quirky and somewhat of a black comedy. All in all, I recommend checking it out.

Flick of the Day

Film: POLTERGEIST
Director: Tobe Hooper
Actors: Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight, Zelda Rubenstein, Heather O'Rourke, Dominque Dunne
Year: 1982

Synopsis: A little girl disappears and a family believes she was taken by spirits.

Most horror films are pathetic. Their only point is to give the audience a series of cheap thrills. Once in a blue moon, a great horror film comes out and 1982's "Poltergeist" is proof of that. Steven Spielberg produced this well written story of a family who is terrorized by ghosts. See it!

Flick of the Day

Film: THE PRICE OF MILK
Director: Harry Sinclair
Actors: Karl Urban, Danielle Cormack, Willa O'Neill, Michael Lawrence, Rangi Motu
Year: 2000

Synopsis: A woman tries to anger her extremely nice boyfriend.

If you are up for a strange, wacky film... this would be the right one for you. Hailing all the way from New Zealand, "The Price of Milk" follows young Lucinda and her fiance Rob. Thinking things are going too good, Lucinda decides to start a fight. Things get a little crazy when Lucinda runs over an old lady. It's weird and odd and sooooo entertaining.

Flick of the Day

Film: HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE
Director: Jean Negulsco
Actors: Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe, David Wayne, Rory Calhoun, Cameron Mitchell, William Powell
Year: 1953

Synopsis: Three young women set their sights on marrying wealthy men in 1950s Manhattan.

I'm not a huge fan of Marilyn Monroe, but she actually did very well in this comedic role. Along with sexy Lauren Bacall and bubbly Betty Grable, Monroe is out to catch herself a rich husband. Bacall is at her best as a cynical beauty who thinks she has it all figured out.

Flick of the Day

Film: THE BONE COLLECTOR
Director: Phillip Noyce

Flick of the Day

Film: GO
Director: Doug Liman
Actors: Sarah Polley, Timothy Olyphant, Desmond Askew, Nathan Bexton, Katie Holmes, Scott Wolf, Jay Mohr, Taye Diggs, Breckin Meyer, James Duval, Jane Krakowski, William Fichtner
Year: 1999

Synopsis: Multiple stories centering around four supermarket employees.

This film tells the story of one night in the eyes of four friends: Ronna (who desperately needs to make money for rent), Simon (who goes to Vegas with a group of friends), Mannie (who takes a bunch of ecstasy pills), and Claire (who gets talked into hanging out with a drug dealer). It's definitely one of the cool flicks of the late 90s.

Flick of the Day

Film: DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN
Director: Darren Grant
Actors: Kimberly Elise, Tyler Perry, Steve Harris, Shemar Moore, Cicely Tyson
Year: 2005

Synopsis: A devoted wife is dumped when her husband takes up with another woman.

This film was the first time I was introduced to... Madea and I haven't stopped laughing. Tyler Perry, who in my opinion is only a decent filmmaker, shines as the elderly, tough-as-nails, smart-ass. The other, less funny, part of the movie revolves around a woman who has been kicked out of her lavish home after her husband decides he wants to marry another girl. Helen (played well by Kimberly Elise) moves in with her aunt Madea in the hopes of starting her life over again. The film is a little heavy at times, but it will make you laugh.

Flick of the Day

Film: THE WIZ
Director: Sidney Lumet
Actors: Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Richard Pryor, Theresa Merritt, Thelma Carpenter
Year: 1978

Synopsis: An updated, urbanized version of "The Wizard of Oz".

I always love an adaptation, especially if it is done well. 1978's "The Wiz" did just that to the classical (and white) story of "The Wizard of Oz". Diana Ross (perhaps too old for the part of Dororthy), Lena Horne, and Michael Jackson all star in this fun-filled film that features great music by producer/writer Quincy Jones.

Flick of the Day

Film: ATTACK THE BLOCK
Director: Joe Cornish
Actors: John Boyega, Jodie Whittaker, Jumayn Hunter, Alex Esmail,
Luke Treadway, Nick Frost, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones
Year: 2011

I caught this gem last week and I'm still thinking about it. From the creators of one of my favorite horror films, Shaun of the Dead", this flick is as much funny as it is scary. Most of the actors are unknown UK kids and they freaking rock. I highly recommend this picture. Check it out and you won't regret it.

Flick of the Day

Film: A HARD DAY'S NIGHT
Director: Richard Lester
Actors: George Harrison, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Wilfrid Brambell, Norman Rossington,
Year: 1964

Synopsis: A musical group has an interesting day.

It was meant to go along with the release of their album, but this parody of life as a megastar was quite funny. Full of witty banter and hilarious one-liners, the Beatles (especially John) show that they have a bit of acting talent.

Flick of the Day

Film: COOL RUNNINGS
Director: Jon Turteltaub
Actors: John Candy, Leon, Doug E. Doug, Malik Yoba, Rawle D. Lewis
Year: 1993

Synopsis: A group of you Jamaicans form an Olympic bobsledding team.

1993's underdog story about a group of men who form an unlikely team, is quite entertaining and endearing. John Candy leads a cast of hilarious and talented actors in this fact-based story of the first Jamaican bobsledding team in the Olympics. You'll laugh, cry, and feel good after this uplifting film about the power of perseverance and hope.

Flick of the Day

Film: EXAM
Director: Stuart Hazeldine
Actors: Adar Beck, Nathalie Cox, Chukwudi Iwuji, Luke Mably, Pollyanna McIntosh, Jimi Mistry, Colin Salmon
Year: 2009

Synopsis: In order to get a high-profile job, eight people take a difficult test.

I had never heard of this 2009 British film, but seeing it was a great experience. This well-written story is very complex and hard to figure out. I kept thinking I knew what the ending would be, but I only figured out a fraction of the plot. It's not everyday that you discover a film so tricky, that avoids the usual storylines and cliches. It's a nice little treat, that will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Flick of the Day

Film: THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
Director: Lisa Cholodenko
Actors: Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson, Yaya DeCosta
Year: 2010

Synopsis: The two children, conceived by artificial insemination, bring their birth father into their life.

I just had the pleasure of seeing this wonderfully-made film and it was quite enjoyable. Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo were in top form. This Golden Globe winning film (for Best Comedy) is funny, heart-warming, and director/writer Lisa Cholodenko did a spectacular job. Netflix it immediately.

Flick of the Day

Film: KISS THE GIRLS
Director: Gary Fleder
Actors: Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, Tony Goldwyn, Alex McArthur, Brian Cox, Roma Maffia, Jeremy Piven
Year: 1997

Synopsis: A doctor escapes being held captive by a serial killer.

A word of advice if you're a female... don't watch this alone at night. It's one of the creepiest films to come out of the 90s. A woman (Judd) is kidnapped from her bed and held captive for several days. She manages (barely) to escape and helps a detective find the mad man. Judd and Freeman are great (as always) and you'll be guessing until the very end.

August 6, 2011

Flick of the Day

Film: HEARTBREAKERS
Director: David Mirkin
Actors: Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jason Lee, Ray Liotta, Gene Hackman, Anne Bancroft, Jeffrey Jones, Nora Dunn
Year: 2001

Synopsis: A pair of mother-daughter con artists try one last scheme.

2001's "Heartbreakers" is a good choice if you're looking to relax and have a few laughs. The cast is good (particularly Sigourney Weaver and a disgusting Gene Hackman), the script is funny, and Hewitt and Weaver are pretty damn hot.

August 4, 2011

Flick of the Day

Film: THE RELIC
Director: Peter Hyams
Actors: Penelope Ann Miller, Tom Sizemore, Linda Hunt, James Whitmore, Chi Lo
Year: 1997

Synopsis: A beast terrorizes a Chicago museum.

It's hard to find good horror/suspense movies nowadays, but 1997's "The Relic" was pretty interesting. Penelope Ann Miller stars as a anthropologist who receives a mysterious shipment from South America. After a bunch of murders, Detective D'Agosta (Sizemore) arrives to try and figure out what is happening. It's pretty well written and will probably give you some anxiety, so check it out!
