Flick of the Day

Film: THE WIZ

Director: Sidney Lumet

Actors: Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Richard Pryor, Theresa Merritt, Thelma Carpenter

Year: 1978

Synopsis: An updated, urbanized version of "The Wizard of Oz".

I always love an adaptation, especially if it is done well. 1978's "The Wiz" did just that to the classical (and white) story of "The Wizard of Oz". Diana Ross (perhaps too old for the part of Dororthy), Lena Horne, and Michael Jackson all star in this fun-filled film that features great music by producer/writer Quincy Jones.

Family Ties

Screenwriter Jenny Lumet ("Rachel Getting Married") is the daughter of Oscar-winning director/producer Sidney Lumet ("Network" and "The Verdict"). She is also the granddaughter of iconic screen goddess Lena Horne.

25 Most Beautiful Actresses

3.) LENA HORNE

With her flawless olive complexion and her beautiful brown eyes, this stunning songbird reigned supreme in 1940s Hollywood as one of the very few black stars. Horne's sultry rendition of 'Stormy Weather', from the film of the same name, is still considered to be one of the greatest theme songs of all time.
