20 Best Horror Flicks

8) Jaws

Director: Steven Spielberg
Actors: Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider,  Robert Shaw,
Lorainne Gray, Murray Hamilton, Chris Rebello, Jay Mello
Year: 1975

There's really only one movie responsible for invoking massive fear in all beach-goers... Jaws. Steven Spielberg brought this terrifying tale to the big screen and, honestly, it's one of the main reason I prefer the pool.

25 Best Christmas Films

17) GREMLINS

Director: Joe Dante
Actors: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates,
Corey Feldman, Hoyt Axton, Keye Luke
Year: 1984

Sure, it's not what you would normally think of as a Christmas movie, but I assure you this flick takes place during the holidays. When a gang of disgusting, slimy, reptile-like demons come to the quaint town of Kingston Falls, all hell breaks loose. One of the best parts: the gross little pranksters sing Christmas carols before attacking. "Home Alone" director Chris Columbus wrote the screenplay and Steven Spielberg produced.

Brit of the Week

Benedict Cumberbatch (July 19, 1976) was born in London to actors Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton. He attended Brambletye School and then Harrow School. Before studying drama at the University of Manchester, he took a year off to teach English in a Tibetan monastery. After graduating from U of M, he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Benedict began his career on the stage, even being nominated for an Olivier Award. From there he did a lot of television ("Heartbeat", "Tipping the Velvet", and "The Ends of the Earth") and several films ("Amazing Grace", "Atonement", "The Other Boleyn Girl", and "Creation"). In 2010, it was his performance in the mini-series "Sherlock" that really put him on the map. Up next: Steven Spielberg's "War Horse" (with Emily Watson and David Thewlis), "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" (with Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong), and the highly anticipated "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (with Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, and his "Sherlock" costar Martin Freeman).

Flick of the Day

Film: AMISTAD
Director: Steven Spielberg
Actors: Djimon Hounsou, Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins, Matthew McConaughey, Nigel Hawthorne, Pete Postlethwaite, Stellan Skarsgard, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anna Paquin, David Paymer
Year: 1997

Synopsis: A group of Africans stand trial for the murder of their captors aboard a slave ship.

Actor Djimon Honsou was certainly robbed of an Oscar nomination for this poignant, beautiful performance of an enslaved African fighting for his freedom. This film is one of the best films I've ever seen and it beautifully tells the story of human will and power. You should definitely see it.

Did You Know...

... the shark Bruce in "Finding Nemo" was named for the shark in "Jaws". Director Steven Spielberg named the mechanical shark Bruce during the filming and writers for "Nemo" paid tribute.

MisMatched

Actor: JULIA ROBERTS
Film: "Hook"
Character: Tinkerbell
Year: 1991

As good an actor as Julia is, it didn't matter in this role. Roberts played 'Tinkerbell' in this 1991 Steven Spielberg masterpiece. She was awkward and odd and the pixie cut wasn't really working. I think the main problem was she was acting on a set by herself most of the time. She seems to need the presence of another actor to enhance her craft. The movie is fantastic, but it could have done with another actor to fill Tinks shoes.

Flick of the Day

Film: JURASSIC PARK
Director: Steven Spielberg
Actors: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Joseph Mazzello, Ariana Richards, Samuel L. Jackson, Wayne Knight, B.D. Wong
Year: 1993

Synopsis: A paleontologist and a paleobotanist visit an island filled with dinosaurs.

One of the best action films of all time, Steven Spielberg's prehistoric masterpiece is a thrill ride, even to this day (nearly two decades after it's release). The cast was perfect, the script great, but it was the special effects that made this fantastic and very realistic. See this one again!

Flick of the Day

Film: THE COLOR PURPLE
Director: Steven Spielberg
Actors: Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Margaret Avery, Oprah Winfrey, Willard Pugh, Akosua Busia, Adolph Caesar, Dana Ivey, Desreta Jackson, Rae Dawn Chong
Year: 1985

Synopsis: A look at the life of an abused woman in the early 20th century.

If you haven't seen this masterpiece... you should be very ashamed of yourself. This brilliant adaption of Alice Walker's touching story is amazing (no surprise, Mr. Spielberg). Whoopi Goldberg, who is known mostly for her comedic performances, is spectacular as Celie, an uneducated girl who is practically sold into an abusive marriage to a man twice her age. This film looks at struggle, like you've hardly seen it before, and the power of hope and true friendship. I can't watch this movie and remain dry-eyed. So, I am starting "The Color Purple" challenge. Watch the film, uninterrupted and see if you can go all the way through without shedding a tear. If you can... you might be an emotionless stone. If you can't, you lose the challenge, but you gain a wonderful cinematic experience.

Did You Know...

... before Michael J. Fox took on the role of Marty McFly in the "Back to the Future" trilogy, 80s actor Eric Stoltz was cast. He even filmed a bunch of scenes, all before ultimately being fired by producer Steven Spielberg and director Robert Zemeckis. Apparently, they felt he wasn't 'right' for the part and we completely agree. It's hard to imagine the time-travel blockbuster without the pint-sized Fox.

Brit of the Week

Simon Pegg (Feb 14, 1970), originally Simon Beckingham, hails from Gloucestershire, England. His parents divorced when he was seven and he took on the surname of Pegg after his mother remarried. He studied theater at the University of Bristol and penned an undergraduate thesis entitled, "A Marxist overview of popular 1970s cinema and hegemonic discourses". In the early 90s, he did the comedy circuit as a stand-up, even taking his one-man show on tour to Australia and New Zealand. He garnered bit parts in several television series. He got his big break after writing a series called "Spaced", which followed a group of people living in a small apartment building. He (along with pals Jessica Stevenson and Nick Frost) starred in it. In 2004, his fame went international when he wrote and starred in the hilarious horror film "Shaun of the Dead". Since then he has had roles in "Star Trek", "Mission Impossible III", "Hot Fuzz", and "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader". Up next for Pegg, the sequels to "Mission Impossible" and "Star Trek" and a lead role in the Steven Spielberg film "The Adventures of Tintin".
