13 Best Wedding-Themed Films

13) STEEL MAGNOLIAS

Director: Herbert Ross
Actors: Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis,
Shirley Maclaine, Julia Roberts, Tom Skerritt,
Dylan McDermott, Daryl Hannah, Sam Shepard
Year: 1989

In one of the biggest tear-jerkers in cinematic history, a slew of female friends help in the planning of a wedding. What makes this story unique is the strength of the friendship amongst these women, even in the face of a terrible tragedy. Check out Julia's 80s crazy wedding 'do.

12) COMING TO AMERICA

Director: John Landis
Actors: Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley,
John Amos, James Earl Jones, Madge Sinclair, Eriq LaSalle
Year: 1988

The story of a Prince who comes to America to find his bride. Great writing and funny performances will have you rolling on the floor and, maybe even peeing your pants. The wedding scene is beautiful and touching... and the dress is amazing.

11) THE PRINCESS BRIDE

Director: Rob Reiner
Actors: Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Chris Sarandon,
Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn, Mandy Patinkin,
Billy Crystal, Fred Savage, Andre the Giant, Peter Falk, Carol Kane
Year: 1987

This was a must-see for children of the 1980s. A young woman accepts the hand of a Prince, when she fears her true love is dead. But when he returns, it's a fight for her, with loads of laughs on the way. Who can forget the priest and his... interesting way of speaking. "Ma-widge. Ma-widge is what bwought us togedder today." "Wove, twu wove"

10) SIXTEEN CANDLES

Director: John Hughes
Actors: Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Michael Schoeffling,
Blanche Baker, Justin Henry, Havilland Morris, Gedde Watanabe,
Paul Dooley, John Cusack
Year: 1984

Perhaps the funniest wedding scene in cinematic history, Blanche Baker does a marvelous job as an intoxicated bride trying desperately to make her way down the aisle. I nearly died when she yanked off her veil because she couldn't "see with this thing on". This is certainly a warning to all future brides; be careful not to take too many muscle relaxers on the big day.

9) THE HANGOVER

Director: Todd Phillips
Actors: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galfinakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha,
Heather Graham, Ken Jeong, Jeffrey Tambor, Rachel Harris, Mike Epps
Year: 2009

While most wedding movies seem to focus on the bride, this distinct flick shows what the men do before the big day. In a series of uncertain flashbacks, four friends try to figure out what happened to them at a drunken bachelor party in Vegas.

8) FATHER OF THE BRIDE

Director: Charles Shyer
Actors: Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams,
Kieran Culkin, Martin Short, George Newbern, B.D. Wong
Year: 1991

In the choice to go with the original or the remake, I went with the remake. The original (with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor) was great, but nothing beats funny-man Steve Martin. Faced with giving away his only daughter on her big day, Martin tries his best to deal with the stress and mishaps that come along with planning (and paying) for a wedding.

7) THE BEST MAN

Director: Malcolm D. Lee
Actors: Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Morris Chestnut,
Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Melissa De Sousa,
Monica Calhoun, Regina Hall
Year: 1999

Here's a wedding from the best man's perspective. An up and coming author travels to be with his college friends for a wedding and runs into a ton of trouble (and lots of misunderstandings). Taye Diggs and Nia Long are great, but the tension/chemistry between snotty Shelby (De Sousa) and cocky Quentin (Howard) is what keeps you laughing all the way through. *Make sure you watch after the end credits for a little extra treat.

6) THE WEDDING SINGER

Director: Michael Coraci
Actors: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Christine Taylor, Allen Covert,
Matthew Glave, Angela Featherstone, Alexis Arquette, Ellen Dow
Year: 1998

How can you go wrong with a movie that takes place in the 80s (but was made in the 90s)? Adam Sandler takes on the title role with a very funny and, surprisingly, sweet performance. After being stood up by his own bride, Robbie (Sandler) meets and falls for wedding waitress Julia (Barrymore). The only problem is, she's already engaged. Arquette sibling, Alexis is incredible as a Boy George-wannabe.

5) MURIEL'S WEDDING

Director: P.J. Hogan
Actors: Toni Collette, Rachel Griffiths,
Bill Hunter, Sophie Lee, Daniel Lapaine
Year: 1994

When you live in a town called Porpoise Spit, it's hard to imagine much of anything. The only thing Muriel really wants out of life is to get married. So she runs away to Sydney (Australia) in hopes of finding that one perfect man. Toni Collette (in a role that required she gain 40 pounds) is awesomely goofy is a movie that made her famous.

4) MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING

Director: P.J. Hogan
Actors: Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz,
Rupert Everett, Philip Bosco, Rachel Griffiths,
M. Emmett Walsh, Christopher Masteron
Year: 1997

With "Steel Magnolias", "Runaway Bride", and "My Best Friend's Wedding", Julia Roberts has the wedding-movie market cornered. In this gem, Jules (Roberts) attends the wedding of her best friend, Michael, with the sole intention of breaking the happy couple up. Look for a pre-annoying Cameron Diaz as the bride-to-be. Also British-born Rupert Everett practically steals the show as Jules gay friend, George.

3) A WEDDING

Director: Robert Altman
Actors: Carol Burnett, Mia Farrow, Geraldine Chaplin,
Desi Arnaz Jr, Vittorio Gassman, Paul Dooley, Lauren Hutton,
Lillian Gish, Nina Van Pallandt,
Year: 1978

A wealthy family prepares for the marriage of their only son into a family that... well, is not exactly up-to-par with their standards. First off, the bride wears braces and is named Muffin. This is one of the craziest weddings you'll ever attend. In true Altman fashion, there are several story-lines going on at once and the cast is tremendous (and huge). This film isn't as well known as the others on the list, but it is truly one of the best you'll ever see. Carol Burnett's performance is phenomenal (she was robbed on an Oscar nomination). *Check out Lillian Gish as the family matriarch. She was one of the first film stars in the 1910s and 1920s.

2) BRIDESMAIDS

Director: Paul Feig
Actors: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne,
Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, Chris O'Dowd,
Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jill Clayburgh, Jon Hamm, Terry Crews
Year: 2011

After seeing this hilarious film, I simply had to redo our wedding list. Kisten Wiig's funny film (which she co-wrote) is one of the best wedding-themed films ever. With a perfect cast (especially Maya Rudolph, Chris O'Dowd, and Melissa McCarthy), this flick will leave you laughing so hard, you may want to check your undies.

13 Best Wedding-Themed Films

1) MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING

Director: Joel Zwick
Actors: Nia Vardolas, John Corbett, Lainie Kazan,
Michael Constantine, Andrea Martin, Louis Mandylor, Gia Carides
Year: 2002

Nia Vardolas based this film on her play (of the same name) and also on her real life (she is married to "Cougar Town" Latino actor Ian Gomez). The laughs come a mile a minute in this hilarious portrayal of a Greek-American family planning a wedding for the daughter they had all assumed would be an old maid. Andrea Martin is phenomenal as Aunt Voula. "You don't eat no meat? That's alright, I make lamb."

Honorable Mention:
Wedding Crashers
Runaway Bride
The Wedding Date
Corpse Bride
Rachel Getting Married
Four Weddings and a Funeral
The Proposal
Sweet Home Alabama
