SAG (2011 films) WINNERS

*who WILL win
+who SHOULD win

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
DEMIÁN BICHIR / Carlos Galindo - “A BETTER LIFE”
*GEORGE CLOONEY / Matt King - "THE DESCENDANTS”
LEONARDO DiCAPRIO / J. Edgar Hoover - "J. EDGAR"
+JEAN DUJARDIN / George - "THE ARTIST"
BRAD PITT / Billy Beane - "MONEYBALL"

***George will most likely take this one because he is beloved in the acting
community, but French actor Jean Dujardin was delightful, endearing, and so funny

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
+GLENN CLOSE / Albert Nobbs - "ALBERT NOBBS”
VIOLA DAVIS / Aibileen Clark - “THE HELP”
*MERYL STREEP / Margaret Thatcher - “THE IRON LADY”
TILDA SWINTON / Eva - “WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN”
MICHELLE WILLIAMS / Marilyn Monroe - “MY WEEK WITH MARILYN”

***Meryl is geared to win, and don't get me wrong, she was excellent... like ALWAYS.
But,come on man, Glenn Close plays a MAN... sort of. And she is long overdue for an
actual film award. Meryl's won a SAG twice. And I know it shouldn't matter,
but come on... it does.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
KENNETH BRANAGH / Sir Laurence Olivier - “MY WEEK WITH MARILYN”
ARMIE HAMMER / Clyde Tolson - "J. EDGAR"
JONAH HILL / Peter Brand - "MONEYBALL"
NICK NOLTE / Paddy Conlon - “WARRIOR”
*+CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER / Hal - “BEGINNERS”

***Chris Plummer is amazing and any 82-year-old that plays a newly-out-of-the-closet
gay man is gonna take home the prize. He is also long overdue.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
BÉRÉNICE BEJO / Peppy - "THE ARTIST"
+JESSICA CHASTAIN / Celia Foote - “THE HELP”
MELISSA McCARTHY / Megan - “BRIDESMAIDS”
JANET McTEER / Hubert Page - "ALBERT NOBBS”
*OCTAVIA SPENCER / Minny Jackson - “THE HELP”

***Octavia is on a roll and will likely get Oscar gold, but I think people like this
character because she exacts the crazy revenge that we all would like to exact
sometimes(but would never do). Newcomer Jessica Chastain is superb in her role as
naive Celia. But, I'm sure Chastain will be nominated many more times in her career...
Spencer... not so sure.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
*THE ARTIST
BRIDESMAIDS
THE DESCENDANTS
+THE HELP
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS

***typically, whatever film wins this award goes on to win the Best Picture Oscar. But, I think "The Help" had the strongest cast performance this year (although I don't think it deserves the Oscar win). So, it's really down to "The Artist" and "The Descendants" and the french film is an industry favorite... not to mention an underdog and everyone loves a good underdog story. Also, the producer told the story of his father winning an Oscar many years ago and not being able to afford a ticket to accept his statue. This is some definite motivation to get him on the stage.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
+LAURENCE FISHBURNE / Thurgood Marshall - “THURGOOD” (HBO)
PAUL GIAMATTI / Ben Bernanke - “TOO BIG TO FAIL” (HBO)
GREG KINNEAR / Jack Kennedy - “THE KENNEDYS” (REELZ CHANNEL)
*GUY PEARCE / Monty Beragon - “MILDRED PIERCE“ (HBO)
JAMES WOODS / Richard Fuld - “TOO BIG TO FAIL” (HBO)

***This could be anyones prize... mainly because, who cares? But, Fishburne is a
tremendous actor, long overdue for some serious recognition.
Pearce is brilliant too, so either way, it's good.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
DIANE LANE / Pat Loud - “CINEMA VERITE” (HBO)
MAGGIE SMITH / Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham - “DOWNTON ABBEY” (PBS)
EMILY WATSON / Janet Leach - “APPROPRIATE ADULT” (Sundance Channel)
BETTY WHITE / Caroline Thomas - “HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: THE LOST VALENTINE” (CBS)
*+KATE WINSLET / Mildred Pierce - “MILDRED PIERCE” (HBO)

***Winslet is the gal to beat. She has swept all of the major awards for this
performance and there's no reason to think she won't grab another SAG.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
PATRICK J ADAMS / Mike Ross - “SUITS” (USA)
*STEVE BUSCEMI / Enoch “Nucky” Thomson - “BOARDWALK EMPIRE” (HBO)
KYLE CHANDLER / Eric Taylor - “FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS” (DirecTV)
BRYAN CRANSTON / Walter White - “BREAKING BAD” (AMC)
+MICHAEL C HALL / Dexter Morgan - “DEXTER” (Showtime)

***This is a tough one too. Buscemi won this last year, so it seems he will prevail.
Michael C. Hall is amazing and deserves it. Also, Kyle Chandler took home the
Emmy, so he might just grab this one too.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
KATHY BATES / Harriet Korn - “HARRY’S LAW” (NBC)
GLENN CLOSE / Patty Hewes - “DAMAGES” (DirecTV)
*+JESSICA LANGE / Constance - “AMERICAN HORROR STORY” (FX)
JULIANNA MARGULIES / Alicia Florrick - “THE GOOD WIFE” (CBS)
KYRA SEDGWICK / Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson - “THE CLOSER” (TNT)

***Jessica Lange, Jessica Lange, Jessica Lange. She just can't do wrong.
She's outstanding in "American Horror Story" and deserves,
surprisingly enough, her first ever SAG.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
ALEC BALDWIN / Jack Donaghy - “30 ROCK” (NBC)
*TY BURRELL / Phil Dunphy - “MODERN FAMILY” (ABC)
+STEVE CARELL / Michael Scott - “THE OFFICE” (NBC)
JON CRYER / Alan Harper - “TWO AND A HALF MEN” (CBS)
ERIC STONESTREET / Cameron Tucker - “MODERN FAMILY” (ABC)

***Ty Burrell is as funny as they come, but this was Steve Carell's last season on
"The Office" and he poured his funny bone... and his heart into a very sweet
performance this year. He deserves to take this one.
BTW: their names rhyme.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
*JULIE BOWEN / Claire Dunphy - “MODERN FAMILY” (ABC)
EDIE FALCO / Jackie Peyton - “NURSE JACKIE” (Showtime)
TINA FEY / Liz Lemon - “30 ROCK” (NBC)
+SOFIA VERGARA / Gloria Delgado-Pritchett - “MODERN FAMILY” (ABC)
BETTY WHITE / Elka Ostrovsky - “HOT IN CLEVELAND” (TV Land)

***Julie Bowen does for the anal-retentive character what Courteney Cox failed to do for
"Friends" Monica. She takes it to a whole new level. If she wins, we'll be happy.
But, we'd also like to see Sofia take this. She's hilarious and
she'll give one hell of a speech.

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
BOARDWALK EMPIRE
BREAKING BAD
DEXTER
*+GAME OF THRONES
THE GOOD WIFE

***it's all about Game of Thrones this season, so it's safe to say this one has it in
the bag. Personally, we think Homeland should have been nominated and...
should take the prize.

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
*+MODERN FAMILY
30 ROCK
THE BIG BANG THEORY
GLEE
THE OFFICE

***Modern Family simply is, the funniest show on television
right now... or at least from this five nominees. The Office is excellent too.
