25 Best Christmas Films

16) BATMAN RETURNS

Director: Tim Burton
Actors: Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito,
Christopher Walken, Michael Gough, Pat Hingle
Year: 1992

With the second installment of the Tim Burton version of the franchise, Michael Keaton's Batman takes on Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito's Catwoman and Penguin. It's dark and weird (like all Burton flicks), but it takes place during the happiest time of the year, Christmas. Although this was a sequel, it still retained the fresh storyline and good (over) acting that we so much enjoyed in the 1989 version. Good job, Burton!

Film: DEATH TO SMOOCHY
Director: Danny DeVito
Actors: Edward Norton, Robin Williams, Catherine Keener, Danny DeVito, Jon Stewart, Michael Rispoli
Year: 2002

You would think that the film, with a cast that includes the likes of Catherine Keener, Edward Norton, and Robin Williams... AND a director that gave us "War of the Roses", "Hoffa", and "Throw Momma From the Train", would bare some resemblance to a decent flick. Not At All!!! "Death to Smoochy" is poorly written and Williams and Norton give over-the-top performances. Skip this turkey!

Did You Know...

1989

... Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito were roommates when they were both unemployed actors. The two have been friends and have worked on several projects together (Douglas produced "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", which costarred DeVito. DeVito directed Douglas in the film "The War of the Roses") since the 1960s.

Performance of the Day

Actor: GLENN HOWERTON
Show: "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"
Character: Dennis
Year: 2005-

I started watching "It's Always Sunny" when it premiered. It's one of those rare shows that mixes absurdity with humor. I've been a fan from the beginning and one of the main reasons is co-writer/creator Glenn Howerton. He's the straight man, so to speak, in a trio of friends (Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day) who own a crappy Philadelphia bar. He's funny and adds a slight bit of sanity to a crazy cast (that also features Danny DeVito and Kaitlin Olson).

Film: WHEN IN ROME
Director: Mark Steven Johnson
Actors: Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel, Anjelica Huston, Danny DeVito, Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard, Alexis Dziena, Peggy Lipton
Year: 2010

It took me... three times to actually finish this boring, pointless... dare I say it... movie. Up until a few months ago, I really questioned the sanity of some of Hollywood. I just couldn't understand the so-called appeal of Ms. Kristen Bell. I had seen her in "Couples Retreat" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", but she was mostly just annoying. I mostly found her to be of average talent and average attraction. But then I caught the entire "Veronica Mars" series (three seasons) last summer and I finally understood. She was fantastic in that show. Funny, dry, witty, and she possessed a likability that few actors do. So, it should be no surprise how disappointed I was with this piece of crap. Bell is so much better than this. Duhamel... I understand. He's a pretty boy (former model) who is good enough to play the leading lady's love interest, but not much more at this point. All in all (if it wasn't already obvious) skip this bomb.

Film: BE COOL
Director: F. Gary Gray
Actors: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Vince Vaughn, Harvey Keitel, Danny DeVito, Christina Milian, Andre Benjamin, Dwayne Johnson, Cedric the Entertainer, Steven Tyler, James Woods, Debi Mazar
Year: 2005

Synopsis: Movie producer (and former gangster) Chili Palmer looks to make a move into the music business by signing a new hot singer.

Despite the fact that it's the sequel to 1995's blockbuster "Get Shorty" with an all-star cast to boot, "Be Cool" is a real stinker. The presence of John Travolta and Uma Thurman (trying desperately to relive their "Pulp Fiction" glory) can't save this turkey (gobble, gobble). The supporting cast is bad (mostly Christina Milian, The Rock, and Andre 3000), the ads are boring (a poster of Andre entitled "Be Bad", Milian with "Be Famous", The Rock with "Be Yourself" and of course Travolta with "Be Cool". CORNY!!), and more importantly, the story sucks. Take a pass on this and netflix "Get Shorty" instead.
