Performance of the Day

Actor: EDWARD NORTON
Character: Gerald
Film: "Stone"
Year: 2010

Edward Norton has long been one of my favorite actors. He has shown his versatility with a wide range of characters over the last fifteen years. His most recent venture into cinema world was the little-known drama/thriller "Stone". Costarring Robert De Niro, Milla Jovovich, and (a tremendous) Frances Conroy, Norton takes over the screen with his portrayal of a manipulative convict.

Candid of the Week

Amber Tamblyn with her body double on the set of "The Ring", 2002

Double Take

Guy Pearce and Chelsea Handler could be twins. Hmmmm...

***Guy is best known for his roles in films like "Time Machine", "The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert", "Memento", and "The King's Speech". Chelsea has appeared on shows like "The Bernie Mac Show", "My Wife and Kids", and "The Practice", but she is most famous as the host of "Chelsea Lately".

Ginger of the Week

New York-born Kate Mara started her career in a 1997 episode of "Law and Order". She landed two recurring roles on "Everwood" and "Nip/Tuck", but it was her role as Heath Ledger's daughter in "Brokeback Mountain" that really got her noticed. She has since appeared in "127 Hours", "Shooter", "Transsiberian" and "The Open Road". Next up, she'll appear in "Ironclad" (with Paul Giamatti and Brian Cox) and "Ten Year" (with Channing Tatum).

MisMatched

Actor: CHRISTINA RICCI
Film: "Sleepy Hollow"
Character: Katrina Van Tassel
Year: 1999

Christina Ricci is an acquired taste. She really isn't a very good actor, but I've grown up with her. I can remember her cute face in "Mermaids" and her odd coming-of-age in films like "Casper", and "Now and Then". That is why it hurts me to say this. Ricci is completely wrong for this film. She's totally unsure of herself. She made me feel uncomfortable (and I'm pretty sure that is not how Burton intended to get that reaction from the audience). What's more... Ricci as the love interest for much older Depp is awkward to say the least. Bottom line: I don't buy it.

Quote of the Day

"You're the one who needs a shrink, Szalinski. You are a nut case. And I'll tell you something, I have got an air hammer in my attic and if you did do something to my kids, there's gonna be pieces of YOU all over the neighborhood!"

"Honey, I Shrunk the Kids", 1989

Flick of the Day

Film: WARLOCK
Director: Steve Miner
Actors: Julian Sands, Lori Singer, Richard E. Grant, Kevin O'Brien, Mary Woronov
Year: 1989

Synopsis: A medieval warlock is transported to 1980s Los Angeles to find a book.

I have seen ads for this movie since I was a child and I always thought it looked stupid. A few months ago I caught it on Netflix and was pleasantly surprised. It was funny. I mean funny. It was also pretty well written, with an original story and a good cast.

Performance of the Day

Actor: MEL GIBSON
Film: "Ransom"
Character: Tom Mullen
Year: 1996

I know what you're gonna say. Mel Gibson has gone crazy. Well, back in the 90s, he was one of the coolest guys in Hollywood. So, I like to remember the nice-guy Mel. Back in his reign of the industry, Gibson took on the role of a tough, distraught father of a kidnapped child. His performance was intense, powerful, and moving. I wish things could go back to the way they were, but alas Mel has gone to no-man's land and I am betting he will never return.

What are you?

Rashida Jones is half African American (her father is music producer Quincy Jones) and half European-Jewish (her mother is actor Peggy Lipton). Jones is best known for her roles in "Little Black Book", "I Love You Man", "The Social Network", and in the television shows "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation".

Flick of the Day

Film: THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
Director: Niels Arden Oplev
Actors: Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Lena Endre, Sven-Bertil Taube, Peter Haber, Ewa Froling
Year: 2009

Synopsis: A disgraced journalist is hired to solve the case of a missing girl.

You must have been under a rock if you haven't heard of the Stieg Larsson novels. Terrific actor Noomi Rapace takes the role of Lisbeth and hits a home-run. This mystery keeps you guessing the whole way through and is filled with loads of surprises. I highly recommend you see this flick... before the American version hits screens.

Where Have I Heard That?

Song: "When You Say Nothing At All"
Artist: Various
Where You've Heard it: "Notting Hill", "The Other Sister"

Double Take

Singer/actor Liz Phair seriously resembles Meg Ryan.

*** Liz Phair can be seen in "Cherish" and "Seeing Other People". Her music can be heard in "Thirteen", "13 Going on 30", and "High Fidelity". Meg Ryan is best known for her roles in "Kate and Leopold", "The Women", "City of Angels", and "You've Got Mail".

Skip It

Film: NEW IN TOWN
Director: Jonas Elmer
Actors: Renee Zellweger, Harry Connick Jr, Siobhan Fallon, J.K. Simmons, Frances Conroy
Year: 2009

I think, perhaps, Renee Zellweger has run her course. She hasn't been in a good movie since 2005's "Cinderella Man" (I'm not counting "Leatherheads" because I am pretending she wasn't in it). This snooze-fest is about an ambitious woman who travels to a small Minnesota town to help restructure a factory. Even that sounds boring. Harry Connick Jr, who I actually liked in "Hope Floats" and "Little Man Tate", is dull as a single father who... you guessed it, falls for scrunch-face-Zellweger. If you're interested in the prissy-lady-out-of-her-element kind of thing, Netflix "Overboard".

Performance of the Day

Actor: PAZ VEGA
Film: "Spanglish"
Character: Flor
Year: 2004

Spanish beauty Paz Vega captivated audiences with her American film debut, "Spanglish". She took on the role of Flor, a Mexican single mother, trying to support her young daughter by taking a job as a housekeeper. She is employed by the Claskys (Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni) and soon finds that she must help her daughter understand life while balancing her workload. Paz is charming and very funny at times (the family dog seems to love her) and I look forward to seeing more of her in American cinema.

Flick of the Day

Film: NINE TO FIVE
Director: Colin Higgins
Actors: Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, Dabney Coleman, Elizabeth Wilson, Sterling Hayden
Year: 1980

Synopsis: Three career women turn the table on their sexist, egotistical boss.

In a time when women were really beginning to get out of the kitchen and into an office, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton took on the roles of Jude, Violet, and Doralee. Three working women just trying to make their way. The big problem is their awful boss, played perfectly by Dabney Coleman. This film is funny, well written, and the cast is fantastic. If you haven't seen this, it's high time you tried it out.

Did You Know...

... actor Taye Diggs (best known for his roles in "The Best Man" and "How Stella Got Her Groove Back") has been married to Broadway star Idina Menzel (she won a Tony for her starring role in "Wicked") since the two starred in "Rent" together in 1996. They both reprised their stage roles (Diggs as Benny and Menzel as Maureen) in the 2005, Chris Columbus-directed film version of "Rent".

Joanne Woodward spends some time with the family dog, 1960s

Performance of the Day

Actor: PAUL RUDD
Film: "Wet Hot American Summer"
Character: Andy
Year: 2001

This little-known gem of a movie was made before Paul Rudd joined the Judd Apatow crowd ("The 40-year-old Virgin", "Knocked Up", etc) and it was my first introduction to 'Rudd the super funny guy'. The film, set at a summer camp in the 80s, is hilarious and features Rudd as the 'hot' counselor. He's ridiculous and arrogant and a bit of an asshole, but he plays this part to perfection.

Check out Rudd with the camp director (played wonderfully by Janeane Garofalo)

Six Degrees of Separation

James Woods and Mary Tyler Moore

(Rules: find the least amount of connections between the two actors. You must use professional connections, i.e film and television projects. No relationship connections (meaning no marriage, etc). You must type out each part of the connection. Example: George Clooney to Owen Wilson. You can do George to Brad Pitt in "Ocean's Eleven". Brad to Gwyneth Paltrow in "Seven". Gwyneth to Owen Wilson in "The Royal Tenenbaums". That would be 3 connections.)

Actors: Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, Frank Langella, Philip Baker Hall, Lily Rabe, Kristen Wiig, Diane Venora
Year: 2010

Gosling and Langella are in fine form!
